Big bags

Totême fall-winter 2023/2024

he bigger, the better is the motto the It-girls have adopted when it comes to bags this season. With plenty of supersized totes to choose from – The Row, Saint Laurent and Chanel stock some of the best – who can blame them?

Saint Laurent’s quilted Icare tote has become a favourite of Zoë Kravitz, Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid. Thanks to its capacious size and classic yet contemporary design, it’s the perfect city bag.

Bella is also rarely parted from Chanel’s graffiti-adorned messenger bag – a past treasure from Karl Lagerfeld’s spring/summer 2015 collection. The super was seen lugging her personals around the shows with the handy shoulder bag by her side. Rihanna is a fan of Chanel’s vintage accessories, too – she’s been spotted with a bright purple ’90s-era duffle.

Big bags from Khaite and The Row are also popular. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has fallen for the former’s Amelia top-handle tote – a style that the brand’s founder Catherine Holstein introduced with customers like Rosie in mind. Kendall and Gigi, meanwhile, have been seen with the slouchy suede Lotus and supple leather Beatrice, respectively.

Balenciaga is another supplier of jumbo bags. For customers who need more space than the Le Cagole provides, its drawstring pouch – which many people likened to a “trash” bag when it hit the apocalyptic autumn/winter 2022 runway – cuts the mustard. As models demonstrated on the catwalk, they can carry more than keys, a wallet and a phone, and look better full than empty.

Expect big bags to dominate the fashion circuit again next season, given that the recent spring/summer 2023 collections brought plenty more options to the table. From Balenciaga’s glove-bag hybrids to the smart intrecciato bags seen at Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton’s gargantuan chain-handle envelope pouches, the wish list-worthy options were endless. Time to size up your next accessory investment.

"Smaller bags have taken a backseat, and bags of larger shapes and sizes have appeared, designed for daily, if not weekly, needs," Giselle Kalkandis, creative director of My Chameleon.
